Golly I hate those blacks so much. Thank God my kids will never have to go to the same school as them.

I wanted to do a thread about 1988 but...meh fine you win, OP. Alright, let's do this.
Just wanted to let you guys know. There's this kid named Elvis who listens to nigger music, dresses like a nigger, and acts like a nigger onstage. Please don't listen to his music.
WELL THEY OFTEN CALL ME SPEED BUT MY REAL NAME IS MISTER EARL

>>127052663Ha ha naturally they were the two worst schlock mills of this era.
>>127052567That actually came out January '56 they didn't have a charting record in '55.
Fuck you for stealing my songs, honkey.
Anon, what are you doing listening to that evil jazz music on West German radio?

And turning it into workout music for suburban housewifes?
>White R&B covers were an exploding business in 1955 and they inevitably far outstripped the originals in sales and airplay, whether it was "Tweedle Dee", "Dance With Me, Henry", "Ko Ko Mo", "Sincerely", "Hearts of Stone", or "Rock Love." ("Earth Angel"'s original Penguins recording split about 50/50 in sales with the Crew Cuts' cover). This was inevitable. Regional labels couldn't match the majors in pressing capacity, polished, slick arrangements, or recording quality. That also combined with how white pop DJs usually shied away from playing black R&B discs.

Lula Reed's original version way more laid back than most of the covers.

>>127055238>be Joan Weber>be the fresh-out-of-HS wife of a NYC bandleader>decide singing would be a lark>end up getting a shot with Columbia to record a rewrite of a country song about alcoholism that was done for a TV special>song becomes a mega hit>unfortunately Weber isn't a very experienced singer and she's also pregnant and can't really tour or promote the record>all the big name pop singers of the day cover Let Me Go Lover instead>Weber is dropped from Columbia after a few more sides>her husband leaves her>she ends up as a librarian in the Philadelphia area and occasional nightclub performer>dies in a New Jersey mental hospital in 1981 at age 45And that as they say is that. >>127052295 (OP)Wow, music is the lowest form of art. It all sounds like complete shit. Every genre sucks. Hope you like either shitty acoustic blues folk sung by a fifty year old black guy who can't afford studio time, jazz pop sung by male and female vocalists who aren't even harmonizing but just singing the same exact vocal line simultaneously, or the most inane rock songs ever written. Worthless medium.
>>127055445these early Connie records give a clue. while she sings well enough, it was the same brassy showtune kind of pop that was a dime a dozen back then and she does nothing to set herself apart from the crowd on this song, which sounds distinctly like Eydie Gorme. she didn't get airplay until having hooks and an actual sound.
>>127055670>Every genre sucks. Not the same as the Shirelles song but it's one of her early period experiments with R&B, which she was arguably pretty good at and this was definitely more fun than her tedious showtune material.

Teresa Brewer's version is the second rec-ed on on Youtube after the JW original. This is probably because it was actually a charting hit while the Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, etc ones were album-only or didn't chart.
>>127056522https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQl7uJxyMQw
Peggy's cover was a single it wasn't an album cut though it didn't chart. She sings far more tastefully than Teresa (no shit?) but isn't quite in her element when she tries to project her voice instead of sounding deadpan.

Page's version also isn't bad probably the one that the vocals are the most effective on.
Apparently Page did a remake of LMGL from the 80s and that was what I accidentally almost clicked on Youtube before realizing my mistake. No I'd rather not hear her by then old as fuck voice over giant 80s drums.
