I always thought it was weird the devil just let him legit win the contest. usually the devil has some kind of sneaky catch but no, he just concedes victory.

The sneaky catch was the devil didn't mention he could bring his band. The devil thought his band would help highlight his own fiddle playing, but it backfired. Instead they just made him look like a tryhard. The boy was able to not only outplay the devil, but also sound better than the devil and his whole band.

the total external volume of a violin, excluding the volume of the air inside, is about 2 liters average. 2 liters of gold is worth about 4 million. didn't calculate the strings though but it wouldn't be that much compared to the 4 million in the rest of the instrument and you probably would want it to have regular strings anyways pure gold strings wouldn't be able to handle any tension

Because he knew hed been beat. He probably would have tricked some lesser fiddle player that barely beat him but johnny was too good.
