300 million times. I wanted to explain my songwriting formula to shed light on the logic / maths behind what I do.

I have a template for writing songs. I write songs based on divisions of 4 timing wise reflecting off of a drum machine. It’s mathematical based on poetry and bars and beats. I use a verse chorus structure for my music. I use rhyme schemes such as AAAA AABB ABAB for each verse or chorus section.

Whole song structure pattern:

ABABCABC

- Verse (16 bars)
- Chorus (16 bars)
- Verse (16 bars)
- Chorus (16 bars)
- Solo (32 bars)
- Verse (16 bars)
- Chorus (16 bars)
- Solo (32 bars)

I do 4 lines of poetry over 16 bars of time with a drum machine for a typical verse or chorus. It’s an extension of beats / bars w drums.

4 beats to a bar
4 bars to a line of poetry
4 lines of poetry to a verse or chorus section

It’s about the rhyme scheme

Example verse:

- I spend all day in my ripped blue JEANS
- Smoking a joint of homegrown blue DREAM
- Put on my head phones listen to QUEEN
- Float away relax and float DOWNSTREAM

Would be 16 bars w 4 bars taken up by each line. The rhyme scheme is AAAA. It’s about the rhyme on the end and the matching meter of each line and spacing it evenly in between blocks of time. It’s inspired by thinking of a computer chip like 8 16 32 64 etc

In poetry they’re called couplets. 2 rhyming lines.

So think of musical time as a grid like a ruler. In this case I have 16 bars highlighted. If there were 60 seconds on a clock divided over 16 bars then every 4 bars would contain 15 seconds. Songs have a bpm that beats at a certain pace.

So 16 bars divide 4 with a line of poetry every 4 bars.

Drums have 4 beats to a bar.
I’m doing 4 bars (16 beats) for every line of poetry.
Or 16 bars (64 beats) for every verse or chorus.
