I've seen a lot of people on this board post this album recently, so I decided to give it a listen. It's...fine, it's an above average rock album. Why is so highly praised though? I'll probably give it another listen with the lyrics pulled up, but I'm a little disappointed.

Same, I was expecting some dark/gothic post-punk similar to Joy Division or Siouxsie but all I got was The Strokes with more reverb.

Agreed. Only thing interesting about it is it shows how quick the shift from 90's optimism to post-9/11 pessimism was, considering it was recorded in November 2001. Frigid Stars by Codeine does what this album set out to do but way better

I've listened to stuff like the strokes, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, etc. I'd say this album is solidly near the top of the whole post-punk revival hierarchy (even though Is This It is probably better), but it's still not as great as I hoped

I remember in high school the first time I listened to it I was gobsmacked over how beautiful Untitled was as an opener.
The rhythm section as a whole is inventive as hell and inspired an entire generation of millennials to take up bass and drums.
The entire album is incredibly atmospheric, dark and at times dissonant and bleak but playful in a way.
Another aspect that flies under the radar to many is the lyricism. No one really gives Paul Banks the credit he deserves for it but tracks like Stella and Leif Erikson use metaphors and storytelling in a way that paints the scenery well and adds to the overall atmosphere of the music.
Top to bottom it's fantastic there isn't a single weak track and I personally love how it flows between the heavy hitters and softer more atmospheric stuff so the sound never gets stale or too samey.
Also no one mentioning The New in here is crazy considering how influential that track has been in the following decades.

The thing people don't like to say about this album is that it's funny. The singer guy's poetry is bold and stupid in this strangely consistent and lovable way that I don't think they ever recaptured on later albums. It's a 9/10 for me

I like their new album a lot. I don't see a hug dropoff in quality between this and their debut but I can't find anybody who has anything nice to say about is. Passenger and Big Shot City can't actually be bad songs.

Genuine question: do you commonly judge albums after 1-2 listens?

I ask because I'm 41 and grew up with albums being the main thing (radio became unlistenable somewhere around 1999). This meant that it was ingrained that I needed 4+ listens before I could start to enjoy any given album.

I love the production is has an interesting kind of feel or atmosphere, very bassy and it kind of envelops you. And I love the way he sings the ridiculous lyrics with such conviction, it's funny.

I usually do listen to an album 5-6 times before I really form my opinion. But usually, I can understand why people like an album on the first listen. TOTBL had me very lost though, I was surprised at just how acclaimed it was.

Respect. That's the way to do it. Another anon made a good point about context: this is a good driving/walking in the city album but maybe not as great when chilling with headphones. My favorite example of this is Lady Gaga, whose music is fun at a house party and legitimately painful when emitted from my own stereo.

Antics from '04 was damn good too. It's all sex and obsession, dangerous murder suicide love triangle music. Interpol is for hot blooded people. (This is why the latinos like these guys so much) Antics is also hot. No weak or filler tracks.
