The guy who made it is 50 and you're probably like 22. I wasn't sitting around listening to jam bands from the 70s when I was young.

I kinda love this album. It's really unique and beautiful. I think Sufjan is a one-of-a-kind songwriter, and the flow/concept of the album is really neat. I will say it has some weak tracks near the end though, it could certainly trim the fat.

What interests me is how deeply and sincerely Christian a lot of Stevens' lyrics are, there is a lot of niche Biblical stuff throughout his work and a truly intimate knowledge of Christianity. This stuff is written too seriously for it to just be a motif. People don't generally think of Stevens as making Christian music yet its blatant even on his more neutral albums like Illinoise, let alone some earlier stuff like Seven Swans. I wonder how he squares what feels like sincere faith in Christ with a homosexuality that he's long tried to hide.

I truly hope there's another dimension out there where Sufjan continued with the fifty states album project and we got more gay church music about Delaware and Hawaii and that I get to live in that dimension one day

I'm a cringe reddit atheist and I love this song so much. The exultant chorus at the end, man. No secular musician is making anything like that.

>a homosexuality that he's long tried to hide
Ah, I don't know, To Be Alone With You is about a yearning for intimacy with god's masculine aspect

It was a product of its time. Sufjan coming out as gay with a black BF kinda ruined it in hindsight. When it came out we all thought he loved the cancer girl and was just kinda a dork but it turns out he was a fruitcake all along.

When men don’t use she/her pronouns while talking about lovers in a sonh, it’s because it’s a gay song.
