Just going off this pic he seems to possess some kind of laser-based mind powers, which is pretty dope IMO

His score for Paprika is dope. It got me to listen to the Byakkoya album, which was interesting and good.

I love his music so much. endlessly colorful and vivid in its expression. he is an artist in the truest sense of the world.

several songs on the Paprika OST was taken from his studio album Byakkoya, which I find to be a far superior listening experience. every studio album (plus EPs and such) from Aurora to Byakkoya are brilliant. his earlier work in P-Model and his latest few albums are also great and worth listening to. he released a new album quite recently which was pretty cool.
picrel are the most essential albums imo. the remix album Switched-On Lotus is a personal favorite of mine. oh and he remixes and reworks a lot of older music so if you want more berserk OST then check out projects like Ash Crow. he has a ton of beautiful music.

I like his music. Now that I have participated in the topic of the thread I will hijack it for Hirasawa-adjacent information: did you know that his old pal from Mandrake and early P-Model, Yasumi Tanaka, apparently made a comeback after several decades of silence? Neither did I until some time ago. Looking at the archives nobody at /mu/ has mentioned this. He's got two albums on Bandcamp. https://yasumitanaka.bandcamp.com/

He's pretending the lasers are like a harp. There's actually electronics that detect there's an object in front of it, and he uses that as an instrument. It's called a Theremin

actually in this case it's not a theremin. He does use theremins sometimes though.
Same concept as elevator light curtains which prevent doors from closing on you. You can interrupt the laser to produce a signal like a key press on a keyboard.
It's just artsy

Tanaka's latest release is Pure Kino.

this is a great pic. For me my top three would be Siren, Philosopher's Propellor, and maybe Virtual Rabbit.

That run from Aurora to Byakkoya is crazy. Not a week album in the bunch, and that's including the P-Model/Kaku P-Model releases

great choices. and yeah his output in the 90s and aughts is incredible. its difficult to pick favorites but my 3 would maybe be Aurora, Philosophers Propeller and Switched-On Lotus. but you could easily make a case for all of them.
also do you have a favorite P-Model and / or Kaku P-Model album? I've been meaning to get more into them for a long time : )

I like Switched On Lotus too cause it showcases a gentler side of Hirasawa that often gets lost or overshadowed by his more frenetic sounds. From what I understand that album was done in memory of some friends from a Thai cabaret who had passed.

I think the album that is most like Hirasawa's solo material is probably the last album called P-Model or Die. Maybe start there and then work backwards? My personal favorite P-Model album is Scuba Recycle, but the self titled album from 1990 and their debut In a Model Room are both stellar too.
