Let's face it, they make Workingman's Dead, and American Beauty sound like thrash metal, and this is coming from somebody who actually LIKES The Band, and was raised on Music From Big Pink, album pictured, and saw The Last Waltz more times than you've had hot meals.

I think it would be fair to say that The Band didnโ€™t have mass appeal outside of their own generation. Which is a shame, Iโ€™d probably put them in the top 10, maybe even top 5, of that late 60s-early 70s era. Theyโ€™re way better than Creedence, who also did the roots rock thing though obviously took a different approach.

it's the sound of it. it is dynamic music meant to be enjoyed in headphones for the most part.
everything a young kid listens to is brickwalled to shit in order to sound 'good' from a phone speaker competing with other modern noises like traffic barking pitbulls niggers shooting guns off and zonked zoometes puking up alcoholic ice teas.
maybe a loud brickwalled remaster or something or a sampled Robertson lick or a duet of some rapper (non music) and Garth Hudson....

They only had a few really big hits, The Weight and Cripple Creek. Nobody (talking mainly Marvel movies and car commercials here) uses their songs anymore outside of those and, personally, I never have to hear The Weight again. It's as overplayed as Sweet Home Alabama or Fortunate Son.

They also rank fairly low on legacy lists of stuff like "50 Greatest Albums" or whatever. Even I never listen to much outside of their self titled and The Basement Tapes, and maybe a few choice performances from Last Waltz. None of the members are famous or infamous; there was never a real breakout star among them that became a household name, no Rod Stewart or Sam Cooke. Nobody really talks about The Band or any of its members anymore. Before Robbie died when was the last time Dylan had mentioned any of them in an interview? It'd probably been years.
