What other musicians have turned "playing wrong" into a recognizable style and somehow made it kind of work?

That's not "playing wrong", it's just syncopation. Lars is (since the Black album) just a terrible drummer. He's sloppy and his accenting is all wrong for what he's trying to go for. He just gave up after 1991.

He didn't make it work. His producers had to painstakingly cut up and rearrange the recording tapes, so that the drumming was in time.
