Just listened to the Rite of Spring for the first time, and I... don't get it? There were some interesting ideas but the piece just feels like movie music for a movie that doesn't exist. A lot of it feels like background music and the progression of the piece seems unnatural, like movie soundtracks do when listened to on their own. Yes, I know it was a ballet, but it seems to be very well-regarded as just a piece of music. I don't understand why...

You know of course it was a movie music before they were invented? It set the soundtrack of the 20th century, sure it might not sound very significant now, after 100 years of people copying it.

You could apply the same argument to the Planets and I think that holds up very well on its own.

Congratulations, you just discovered programmatic music.
Anyway, The Rite of Spring is influential but a bit overrated. Maybe you listened to a bad performance too.

Yes but that was supposed to be understood on it's own and not part of a ballet. Also the Planets was much more rooted in the past and germanic symphonic tradition in terms of sound while the Rite was much more modernist and forward looking despite the ancient themes.

If anything that should make it more interesting on its own, no?

You're seem butthurt people have opinions and don't agree on everything. It's overrated in the context of ballet music and Stravinsky's own works. There are more interesting pieces out there.
