New Zealand 'tropicalia' singer Daphne Walker died. She was an ethnic Maori who was developed by the NZ music industry in the 1950's to appeal to the Polynesian/exotica market. She also had a bit of success in South Korea due to Australian/NZ troops stationed there after the war. However, she did not like performing or touring, which limited her commercial success. What does /mu/ think of this type of forgotten pop music?

>Walker was best known for songs likes ‘Haere Mai (Everything is Kapai)’ popular in the 1950s.

>Online music library AudioCulture said Walker was the star vocalist on New Zealand’s first tropical pop album, South Sea Rhythm, and describes her death as the end of an era.
