Why did Pitchfork cream their pants so hard over this album?

Subjective opinion, left to a sole reviewer, converted into the objective 10.0 rating. I myself fell for the meme during my college years.

The big two things that I remember them getting wrong were Mr. Oizo's Lamb's Anger, which was initially evaluated at like 2.5 or thereabouts (HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE opinion). IIIRC the initial review of Boards of Canada's Music Has the Right to Children was like 8.3 or thereabouts, but they revised it later to 10.0 (maybe not a 10.0, but certainly a 9.5+). Such is the fun of criticism.

The Bonnie Prince Billy album is a 7-ish singer songwriter thing, nothing special. Pin it on that one reviewer, OP. Then again, I don't care for Brian Eno's stuff overall although I enjoy lots of other electronic/ambient stuff.

Will Oldham's whole thing is writing really unpretentious singer songwriter alt folk country, and that leads to a lot of really mediocre landfill music, even if he has good lyrics and an exceptionally good voice suited for the style.

There's a good amount of outlier songs that capture a certain kind of beautiful brokenness espcially on the Palace era albums like I Tried To Stay Healthy For You, New Partner, Brute Choir, I See A Darkness, A Minor Place, Gulf Shores, Trudy Dies, and The Letting Go is a quite good album all the way through as are the Superwolf records with Matt Sweeney.

He just doesn't lean into the loose broken down sound that the Palace albums had enough and tends to go autopilot with his songwriting presumably for a philosophical reasoning like "I just need to write and keep writing and letting it come out without laboring over it" kind of approach which leads to a lot of boring songs. Having said that, just as recently as his latest album there's the song London May which is fantastic, so it's a broken clock is right twice a day kind of phenomenon. I think Will Oldham relatively deserves the hype he gets but maybe we would understand better if we were a bit older, I'm 28 and I consider myself a fan but maybe if I was 40 or something he might be one of my all time artists. Meanwhile as far as singer songwriters go Mark Kozelek is my guy.

It's a bit twee and precious which, in 1999, was sort of in vogue among music geeks. This album has a alt-folk-country feel to it, but it's more like power pop if you really think about it. It's pretty catchy and the style changes up constantly.

I fail to see the pretentious nature of his music. At his most experimental he makes loose noodley ambient jams with soft vocals on top, big deal. His overall style is very approachable for average folk and country fans. His lyrics are simple and approachable. What's pretentious about this?

Why does everyone in the 2020s hate this now? To me it's preferable over the current safe-edgelord schtick that's so popular these days
