which would make her 2 years older than Lehrer. but then again Vera Lynn lived to 103 and Mitch Miller hisself lived to 99 so anything's possible.

didn't have an identity of her own i guess. many of her records she just emulates Doris Day's voice and was pretty much a vessel for whatever songs RCA and Columbia gave her. she was married and had 2 kids so she probably couldn't get too far into a music career anyway.

That kind of singer has always existed. Has no actual identity and is just there to mouth songwriters' tunes. So was Diana Ross. She also had no sound of her own.

Sure you might make fun of Pat Boone or Teresa Brewer and blah blah blah but they did have obvious identities and a recognizable sound/schtick while there were a lot of their contemporaries who were just a meat puppet for the record label or songwriters and had no identity of their own.

>After taking over Columbia's pop records division in 1950, Miller was eager to find new young talent as some of the label's established stars like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Dinah Shore were pushing 35 and had lost their youthful luster. Shore quickly left Columbia as she disliked Miller's new creative direction and Sinatra feuded with him and saw his career collapse to almost nil before departing two years later.

>Columbia already had Rosemary Clooney who had signed as a solo singer a year prior to Miller's arrival. He also picked up Al Cernik, decided his real name wouldn't do, and re-dubbed him Guy Mitchell, including his own first name, and was eager to market him as the new Sinatra. Mindy Carson was acquired from RCA in '51. This new group of young singers were more marketable to teenagers and unlike Sinatra and Shore more amenable to Miller's creative vision.
