so i guess he can write a decent song but just can't arrange and perform them worth a lick. are there other artists where cover versions are nearly always better than their originals?

Also that he nicked other people's songs. There's one song Bob stole and the bloke that had just composed it couldn't stop him and that was it, he lost it. It is a famous song, I can't remember what one.

Well yeah, folk singers are usually just poets with guitars, more interested in lyric than melody, using some second-hand tune. It takes a real musician to turn it into interesting music.
