Recorder type flutes have been around forever, one way or another. Possibly THE first instrument, since the basic form is the first known (besides the voice). That is, just plain wind flutes rather than reeds. They found what might be a neanderthal flute made of bone. Up until recently, people thought they were just brutish retards.
