The changing tuning while playing thing just rubs me the wrong way for some illogical reason. It's totally functional and his playing is great but the retuning seems so silly and gimmicky. Same vibe as the stupid fingerstyle tapping stuff.

Changing tuning mid-piece isn't unusual at all if you want to access a drone note or have an easier time playing problematic chords. It's just most players aren't good enough, or don't have an appropriate guitar, for pulling it off.
