They were more like part of the Minneapolis scene back when Husker Du were their peers. Both bands were practicing some blend of noisy punk-influenced rock.

Cobain probably copied Pirner's aesthetic with dishevelled hair and shredded jeans, some were even calling him out for that.

It's interesting that Soul Asylum was also trying to get a more mainstream sound before Nirvana's Nevermind blew out. I suppose there was a general trend among multiple bands from that underground scene of punk-influenced bands.

If Husker survived more years, they were already starting to get noticed by MTV, had a video, etc. They could have become the first alt-rock band to break in the mainstream.

And of course Bob Mould did break out somewhat with Sugar. Mould (and Westerberg, and Pirner to a lesser extent) ended up being really good songwriters once you stripped away the noise and edge.

Yeah I don't know how Pirner achieved such a big jump in songwriting from the 1990 horse album to the 1992 GDU album, on which he had 3 big hits. They got a grammy for the best rock song in 1994.

I mean sure Nirvana's success drew attention to them too, but that didn't write their songs... They had a huge qualitative peak in 1992 and then they kind of went back to (global) obscurity.

I think they would have still been successful even without alt-rock blowing up so spectacularly, because quite a few of those bands from the college rock scene (REM, later Husker, Smithereens) were starting to gain traction in mainstream charts.
