I'm relistening to The Fall's discography and Brix made the group way worse. I'm glad she got the guys some money and a level of mainstream fame/attention, but she melodicised the sound too much, took away the rawness and replaced it with cutey poppy bullshit, they went from having entire great albums before 1983 to only three or four good songs an album during her tenure. Plus all the ones she sings on are fucking terrible, i mean just compare this shit with anything from Witch Trials or Grotesque or Hex:

And they never really recovered.

would you rather them play boring post punk shit forever? their evolving sound is what made them unique

I have to agree with this. They made Hex, they made Trials and Dragnet. Grotesque... That's enough material of the same Fall flavor, as good as it is. Time for a new flavor. Man's gotta eat. It took them a while before they reached "Hit The North" and after a decade they went back to a smiliar sound of their early days, just more modern sounding production-wise. Your complaint is a bit greedy, suggesting they changed so dramatically, when albums like Frightening World barely stand apart from the early sound. It's easy to evade Brix's alleged pop/melodic influence in their discography. It's also not the worst sounding imo.

still great
>took away the rawness
christgau says it better: "almost all of these well-culled "songs," which include half a dozen already singled out on 1990's Brixified 458489 A Sides, catch his Hyde Park cadences at their most barbed, annoying, and possibly prophetic, with the groove muscling up after the middle-period keybs [he's talking about the brix period] go away"
>And they never really recovered.
The kept releasing great music until the end.
>>127090302
The Fall never tried to replicate themselves, they were always changing. I don't know if that's "evolution" but was great. If you're looking for that specific early Fall sound you have the countless of post punk group making pastiches of it but the masters are always moving on. In that regard records like Extricate, Infotainment Scan, Marshall Suite, The Unutterable, Imperial Wax Solvent or Your Future Our Clutter speak by themselves.
>>127091322
I mean, someone like Steve Albini have the same opinion about Brix arrival in 1983, but he considered The Fall was "in the late 90's" in the period of great records like Marshall Suite or The Unutterable, when The Fall turned into a unpredictable glorious mess after the sacking of the classic lineup. I personally consider the Brix era pretty good but i still prefer the 78-82 period over the 83-88 one

Both songs are great by the way, as i said is still a great era even if i prefer the 78-82 and the 90-2017 eras

Literally nothing else sounds like early Fall though, even with imitators there's always something off. Oddly enough, the closest thing to early Fall in sound is XTC's White Music.

So you guys just like everything Fall? Like i said in the OP, in every album i've listened there's at least 3 or 4 songs i really like, but pre-1983 Fall is entire albums of great songs, i mean i really think i could listen to Witch Trials and Dragnet everyday and not get tired.

I also might prefer Brix her second time around in the band, this performance is amazing:

Brix was okay but she was a net negative toward the band’s sound. Their 1980-1983 run (right before she joined) was the peak of rock music.

it’s worth noting that MES always wanted a hit and was actively chasing one, hence all the cover version singles. Making the band poppier and hookier wasn’t all Brix’s influence. The one time he was on Top Of The Pops (with the Inspiral Carpets, not the Fall) he couldn’t hide his delight.

In fact The Fall was very careful about the melody during its different eras. Also The Fall isn't punk.

Perverted by Language is her first album, but it's honestly not very accessible (even if it is a masterpiece). The poppiest stuff started with the singles surrounding The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall like CREEP, No Bulbs and Oh! Brother. But honestly, none of the albums with her are that poppy, other than maybe The Frenz Experiment. Beyond the odd track, you'll find the catchiest songs by the band from her era are non-album singles, best collected on the 458489 compilation and its companion B-side set.
