Here's my take: His contributions to the first three Southside Johnny albums are his best songwriting.

Start at the beginning. Darkness is best appreciated in conversation with its predecessors. Then go up to Born In the USA and the rest is your choice.

Just start early. Maybe Greetings from Ashbury. If you don't like that, you probably won't like him in general.

Fly around in a private plane with Obama. Then you'll be just like Bruce.

Unironically Live 75-85. Many of Bruce's albums suffer from lifeless (over)production, and the songs truly come alive on stage. Plus it's a well-sequenced and sizeable helping that spans practically his entire golden era. Complement with Hammersmith 75.

Even if his studio albums fall flat you should give live Bruce a shot. Some of the best rock music ever performed.

unironically, see what christgau says.
he's actually pretty good at picking out what's better and what was a disappointing album from artists he likes.

Nebraska is a great album.
Also, he tracked most of it on a little 4-track Tascam PortaStudio - even the most insecure of contrarian naysayers must concede that's impressive, if not further testament to his strength as a singer and songwriter.
