When people abandon the Transcendent, it doesn't mean they abandon religion. They just apply morality and spirituality or what have you everywhere else. It's never "Big" and all encompassing and beneficial to all humanity. It's never big enough to have Love. It's petty and small and even more cruel in its need to control and cast out the evildoers it perceives. Like a vicious Puritan from the 1600s, but without the same God. His new god is some utter bullshit in pop culture. Maybe something in music tastes, or movies, or politics, complete with apocalyptic prophecies and hellfire for the evildoers who don't play along. And online holy wars of sad people genuinely wanting to kill each other over bad vidya or anime taste.
