is it supposed to be ironic? terrifying? or depressing?
Imagine you're an underground noise/punk guy and you end up somehow involved in what would become the prototypical Soundcloud rap scene. You realize it's inherently fucking stupid but because you've done a few black metal songs in the past you can still enjoy the kitsch horror and lo-fi fetishism. All of the people in said scene are down in Florida, Georgia and Texas while you're stuck in Virginia, which has never had any real musical presence outside of... *checks notes* pub rock and Pharrell Williams. So you swallow your pride and try to emulate the style while fully aware you're the last type of guy who should be making this sort of music. You make sure to establish your rap persona as an alter ego right from the get-go, because ultimately you're just another in a sea of mixtapes... right?
Well, it turns out that having spent so much time swapping from small project to small project made you a little bit schizo, so your lyrics and beats, while admittedly just a tad above-average, became way more interesting by virtue of the fact they sounded like they came from your stage name. In other words, people who discovered this tape could easily construct a mythos and add to mystique because the real you was completely anonymized through the ironic layer you constructed as an afterthought. This mixtape you put out was so tongue in cheek, but only because everyone who heard it could intuit that you were more than a rapper, you had something else up your sleeves. Now the sky was the limit, you could reintroduce the music you started with little by little and use this fake identity as a filter for your real self. And as you become more comfortable with peeling back the curtain, this simultaneously unravels the character you created, so that when you effectively kill him off and reveal who you truly are, people can accept that almost unflinchingly.
