Japanese fusion bands like Casiopea basically sound like vidya music. They don't sound like chiptune of course, specifically the ym2612, but they're the closest thing without actually listening to chiptune.

Nope. It was the bassist of Dreams Come True a popular duo then in Japan. He produced the themes in his keyboard with the only limitation of 6 tracks. The chip audio limit. He recorded it in a cassette and send it to Sega. Then the studio "translated" the music to chiptune.
It wasn't for kids btw. Dreams come true was paraded and they were so much involved in the promotion of the game.
