Overrated as a guitarist by his hardcore fans. But I have to give him credit, he has way more tasteful solos in his songs than most beloved rock guitarists.

He was a good performer but a mediocre songwriter. The fact that he demanded to do everything himself probably hurt his output quality.

Have you even heard a Prince album? I just can't fathom someone liking Prince's hits and then listening to 1999 or Puple Rain and being like "man there's so much filler here". Most of his 80s albums are bangers front to back.

The 80s albums are gold up until Parade. From Dirty Mind until Around the World in a Day it was nothing but 9/10 or 10/10s. Parade was middling and only redeemed by Kiss. Sign 'o the Times has good tracks has a bunch of filler and is surprisingly overrated while the Black Album is way underrated (Dead On It made a lot of people seethe because it hit too close to home). For me the true break between old Prince knocking out banger after banger and filler in profusion is when he pulled the Black Album. There he reaches a point where he doesn't even release anything better than a 8/10 again and the filler proliferates.
