>Prior to signing with MGM in 1955, then 18 year old Francis recorded a demo for Columbia. Columbia pop records head Mitch Miller rejected her as having no marketing potential. Miller thought Francis was too frumpy, ethnic-looking, and had no sex appeal. She went on to superstardom on MGM and when her initial contract was up for renegotiation in 1959, Miller tried in vain to get her to sign with Columbia but MGM offered her a platinum-plated deal to renew her contract with them.[3]

Tony Bennett somehow stuck it out with them all the way into the 70s.
>>127128443 (OP)Why isn't Where The Boys Are on that record?
>>127128657Because that was her first best-of collection from '59 and that song wasn't out until '61.
>>127128478Her psycho dad was bad enough, she didn't also need to be singing "Sugaree" on top of it.
>>127128443 (OP)Ah ok that must explain why she was mysteriously not cut from MGM despite over two years of no charting records. She had a contract that ran several years so they would have been required to keep her until 1959. I can see why she was getting worried by late 57 though because she hadn't had any hits yet and could have been dropped in another year when her initial contract expired.
>>127128443 (OP)I think the only constructive accomplishment Mitch ever had was transforming Frankie Laine into a pop country singer instead of the generic crooner he initially was.

>>127129008Frankie wouldn't have done it if it wasn't within him though. He had a cowboy hidden inside of him. Like Deano.
>>127129008They were close friends and Miller eventually brought him over to Columbia in the early '50s. It does seem Laine was the only singer he worked with who seems to have had a good relationship with him.
>>127128478They actually released one single for CBS, it flopped and they immediately got dropped.
>>127128443 (OP)Miller also thought signing Beverly Ross was a good idea and enable them to get a foothold in rock and roll. That was also a pretty embarrassing mistake.
if you didn't know, Beverly Ross was a loudmouth Jew Roseanne Barr lookalike who wrote rock and roll songs for other people. For some reason Miller thought she could also be a singer in her own right. He quickly realized that was a mistake and she lasted all of two singles. Mainly because she approached Chappell Roan level of unable to control her mouth.

>>127128443 (OP)She never got picked up by rock critics or accepted into the canon and her hits didn't make the cut onto oldies radio. Why, who knows?
