Why is there no board for serious discussion of important music? - /mu/ (#127129628) [Archived: 485 hours ago]

This board is near exclusively manchildren pretending pop and rock music is art, and is diametrically opposed to any genuine form of artistic expression in music, most of it relegated to a single general and some random threads here and there. /lit/ manages to actually talk in depth about historical works of literature and doesn't start talking about Fifty Shades Of Gray, Twilight and Game of Thrones (You might call this comparison ridiculous, but this board seriously discusses Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and literal boybands, and I am not even referring to the beatles when I say that). The people that are into non-art music need to be contained somewhere, as the two do not mix. My proposal is a two board solution

>/mu/ - Popular music
This board is for the discussion of essentially everything that is album-oriented (i.e music written for the express purpose of being sold on an album)
>/artmu/ - Art music
Intended for discussion of serious music both from the western classical tradition, but also serious forms of Jazz, traditional music of various cultures, etc

Mods don't actually do anything, I know. But I think it's still worthy to discuss the importance of having a genuine place to discuss certain types of music

Try actually describing what you liked or disliked about the last album you listened to, and you will immediately understand why most of /mu/ is just white noise.

I've seen the same discussion take place on /tv/ almost a decade ago
they wanted to make /film/ happen and get away from the average low-brow shitposting and blockbuster discourse
of course it went absolutely nowhere
4chan wouldn't spend extra resources creating a slow board that could be a general
all the small niche boards have been made long ago

just start a regular /artmu/ thread on this board, it's not that difficult. Good luck getting a serious conversation going, but it wouldn't be any easier if you had a whole separate board called /artmu/

I think there are two problems:
1. Music is highly subjective. It's not uncommon that I recognize the artistic value of some music, but fuck I don't like it.
2. It's extremely difficult to create music that can be multi-layered. The best TV shows had poop'n'shit jokes for low-IQ audiences and at the same time deeper discussions for more sophisticated audiences, and we all had fun together, and we could migrate between audience groups. With music, it's really difficult to create a song that captures this idea.

What you described isn't music being subjective; it's taste. And no, that's not the same thing. The fact that you can recognize artistic value despite disliking it proves that music has objective qualities.

Like what, exactly? The image clearly acknowledges overlaps, which already account for much of the historical or cultural ambiguity. You could maybe argue that spiritual/religious/ritual music deserves its own category, but beyond that, the three types presented here are based on actual scholarly work and are broad, functional, and descriptive enough to cover the overwhelming majority of music throughout history.

Where is the avantgarde? And the musique concrรจte? And field recordings?
We are here listening to Chernobyl, to kids having panic attacks, to women choking on their own tears and you are thinking about Wikipedia definitions for what is "art music"? And what do you come up with? Classical? Some freemason got forced into your skull as some kind of figure you gotta look up to and you keep glazing him. Why? You think that makes you smart? Only thing you can do is to have normalfaggots live rent free in your head. The entirety of your identity is dictated by them: your teachers are those who told you that poor blackman music is smart. They told you the landowners were listening while getting drunk is smart. You look at the Billboard 100 and decide that this is your archnemesis, that this is not what art is. That is your dichotomy. Nothing beyond it.
Allow it bruv.
You have not reached art yet. You are still stuck at the superficial understanding of music.

Funny that you pretend that classical music got forced upon anyone's skull when you enjoy avantgarde, a literal CIA psy op created as propaganda for the US. Avantgarde is not art and never will be, none of your listed postmodern nonsense is art. You claim that the guy you're replying to has a superficial understanding of music but you are the one who thinks that non-musical slop is music because some academic jew told you it was. This post reeks of projection. Pathetic display, really

Where in this trichotomy do niche electronic/EDM genres (like brostep subgenres or breakcore) sit?
They're not "art music" because their only value is the sick wubs bro and schizo drums.
They're not pop because they're made for small internet niches.
They're certainly not folk either.
I think we need a fourth category for "skill music" that exists purely to showcase technical achievement or virtuosity, without necessarily being "art music" (even though it can obviously overlap and create combinations with the other three)
