Little known fact: Geezer Butler, not Tony Iommi, came up with the riff on the song "Black Sabbath".

fantastic bass player. perhaps underrated even. most doom/stoner stuff inspired by sabbath don't have bass nearly as creative as geezer.

Main lyricist. He's credited as co-writing most of their songs. Hugely important part of the band.

I'll just say it: Sabbath had the overall best sounding rhythm section in metal. I'm not talking about technical anything, just about who was the best in terms of composition and feeling. Think of that ominous, creepy pounding drum and bass in the song Black Sabbath. Henry Rollins once said it sounded like someone getting knocked down in a fight and then slowly getting back up and you know that's someone's about to get fucked up.

Yep, Neil Murray's a great bass player himself but he was completely right when he said that Geezer is indisputably THE Sabbath bassist.

he comes from old-stock REAL Brits. Probably has lineage going back 1500 years in Britain. His ancestors were most likely LITERAL butlers

Is that true? I believe he showed him the tritone, but I thought Iommi still came up with the riff.

Iommi is mostly responsible for the music. But Sabbath has some really good lyrics. Underrated.

It would have been great if, in addition to being massively praised, he had been massively copied.
Melodic bass is very rare in metal.
DiGiorgio, Burton, McKagan, and the like are the exception.
Truly, the metal genre would be better if the bass wasn't limited to the octave of the guitar.

Grey eminence of Black Sabbath. Ozzy and Tony get all the acolades but Geezer and Bill are the brain of the band. His lyrics and bass are goat
