I don't see the comparison. Someone said the other day that Tom Waits is Industrial Blues. That fits. Nick used to be Drunk Jim. I guess he's been semi-crooner Jim for about 30 years.

There isn't any similarity between them really but they're both in a broad category of somewhat dark singer songwriters who don't sound like anyone else. Nick Cave and Tom Waits aren't really any specific genre usually they're just their own 'thing'.

Leonard Cohen is in this same grouping too.

tom takes from sort of proto rock blues in his early stuff, he even dabbled in industrial

>He began in the folk scene during the 1970s, but his music since the 1980s has reflected the influence of such diverse genres as rock, jazz, Delta blues, opera, vaudeville, cabaret, funk and experimental techniques verging on industrial music.

but yeah, he is a singer song writer with many genre inspirations, has a sort of dark streak, very charles bukowski like underclass type of guy

waits is werid, you will get a blues song, but then like you will get something that sounds like its from the 1920s and being sung in a bar with drunk friends.

he does do rock, but he seems obbssed with like a pre rock age a bit and takes from many genres

interesting (though that wiki page is kinda worthless), RYM's definition of "the theatricality of cabaret with the dark instrumentation of Gothic Rock" seems to fit a lot of Nick Cave's stuff
