never posted on /mu/ til this morning, see bunch of threads with few replies. Posted a "lyric/meaning appreciation thread" and it got archived by the time i checked back. do people come here? maybe music is too diverse in taste for how small the number of people here are to stay active. looks like only the kpop thread has energy

this is meta but its pretty much agreed that music is dead, rock is dead, metal is dead, electronic music is dead, rap is dying, and mainstream music has been wittled down pop girls and pop country.

its real grim times if you actually like music

I think theres a lot of good music being made to be honest, theres more made than ever which means more slop than ever, but also tons of good stuff. recently, for example,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqnYz3Ty3Qc&list=PLodVE6xhaFnculI4yfgL5XutzExS8fZd5&index=47
thrasher ish stuff idk genre names. love the atmosphere
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV9FLG2FTjo
decade old ish but tons of touhou music and covers are made in all sorts of styles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhXUngCWx7I
pretty ambient acoustic bell song for a game mod
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPghHTW8tSE
just good rock/metal, instrumental
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i_nc5GGIsI
good cover of a cool song thematically, ADO gotta have a voice to respect even if you hate jap stuff
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p866CqnG8sU&list=OLAK5uy_keQt2T7DMKqVBFyUXz4YtDg4GOrYuQJbU
some ska/denpa style music, very energetic and humorous n existential
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO0WjQqkjxY
some EDM stuff

I guess a lot of jap stuff but random pulls that are modern ish, I do see something put up occasionally. I guess I dont know for western stuff as much, i guess i havent seen much modern new stuff catch my eye in reccs, but surely theres lots of small artists making something. I think a lot of passionate people fo to game OST's because music is another tool to tell their story.

His stuff with Sabbath is absolutely legendary, but I don't like 90% of his solo stuff and I agree with what Dio said about him: Ozzy is more of a showman than a musician. Most of the heavy weight came from the musicians that played with him, such as Randy Rhoads and Jake E. Lee. Ozzy's importance came from his influence, it's undeniable that he shaped heavy metal during the 1980s and helped to put a lot of bands into the spotlight.

"Inclination of direction, walk the turned and twisted rift
With the children of creation futuristic dreams we sift
Clutching violently we whisper with a liquefying cry
Any deadly final answers that are surely doomed to die
Won't you help me Mr. Jesus, won't you tell me if you can?
When you see this world we live in, do you still believe in man?
If my songs become my freedom, and my freedom turns to gold
Then I'll ask the final question, if the answer could be sold
Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it
'Cause I've got no reason to lie, yeah
Forget your problems that don't even exist
And I'll show you a way to get high, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
So come along, you know you matter to me
Remember freedom is not hard to find, yeah
Time to stop all your messing around
Don't you think that I know my own mind, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Why can't you believe, it's not here to perceive
Do you always have to be told, yeah
For you have been taught that if your mind has been bought
Life's entire answer was sold, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah"

Wouldn't call it "wokeness" but there is a modest amount of some questionably liberal shit.

"no bone movies" yeah that's not really woke is it.

So on the other hand he wasn't Bathory. What was going on with their influence. we'll say that.

That's like saying demonizing metal by Christian Conservatives in the 80's inadvertently gave rise to rap. That's not true at all. The US government intervened because of tipper gore and they were forced to put labels on their tapes and cds.

so rappers would deliberately say the n word to get the label put on their record so kids would know they were "good" you know what i mean .

So it looks like it was really all marketing and whoever did something first. So rap music said so much shit that undermined rock and metal, after cobain killed himself, snoop dogg and tupac and biggie killed it all. then all turned to shit.

Ozzy was an absolute savior.

No idea with the "woke" whatever the fuck that is. Unquestionable liberal touch. His voice and lyrics are what made him. For as well as some of you people were raised, You people have the tendency to speak like fucking idiots sometimes.

If he was so wicked then why did he put his whole family on tv for the world to see. that was surley the most insane thing he ever did. Rip ozzy.

His solo stuff was good in being a showcase for talented musicians and songwriters in spite of him.

No. As much as I love the original Sabbath line up. They were great in spite of Ozzy, not because of him. With a different singer, such as Gillan, Coverdale or any other great vocal talent, they would have been even better. Ozzy has never been a very good singer. He was successful post Sabbath, due to his crazy antics, which was mostly staged, and most importantly, surrounding himself with talented people who could write music. Making the way they were treated even worse. Ozzy and Sharon are the way they are out of insecurity. Ozzy not being very talented, in the musical sense. In the marketing and manipulation sense, they're both very talented.

I also listen to a lot of video game music, but it's not the only good thing out there. Although you have to be wary of what is A.I. music and what is music made by humans. My cutoff is 2018-2021. It's the safest bet that it was still made by humans.

Ozzy's banshee wail played a HUGE part in shaping the style and aesthetics of heavy metal. It also made the band more unique sounding, which probably got them more attention than if they had a conventional sounding singer. So I think he made them more successful and influential for sure. But you're right that he wasn't a good singer from a technical standpoint. (Not that I give a shit about that.)

His catalogue is pretty solidly "Good", with a few songs that are genuinely "Great", but his solo career veers more into the "Good" territory whereas his stuff with Sabbath was consistently "Great", mostly due to the other band members than just his vocals. Iommi and Dio talked about it a little after Heaven & Hell dropped, Ozzy's vocal style was to sing with the instrumentation which means that the songs are catchy as hell, but lyrically limited because they can only be as catchy as the music is. The Dio years offer a nice contrast.

Overall, am sad he's gone, but he left behind an impressive legacy that definitely still affects the genre/industry today. Its more sad to me that we've now lost two out of the three legendary NWOBHM vocalists; first Lemmy, now Ozzy, and Rob Halford isn't faring very well health-wise either. Once he's gone, that's basically it.

Fuck yeah, it was good. I remember jamming out to some of his music on Jack FM... the world is now a sadder place w/o him. All hail the prince of darkness.

Fucking this, literally no other singer, even if it was Dio, Halford, or Dickinson, or any other "traditionally talented" metal singer could make the Ozzy-era Sabbath songs as special as they were. They'd be good songs still, but they wouldn't be the fucking icons that they are.

Yes. Sabbath is god-tier, and the first two solo albums are also good.
