I honestly feel a bit bad for her. Not too bad because she's has infinite money at the end of the day. But the nonstop hate from people online and the divorce have obviously affected her heavily. Perry is a true pop artist, built in the tradition of Spears and Madonna. The crop of women we have now, who try to seem echt and savvy and talk about the pitfalls of fame, are embarrassing to listen to. Katy Perry at least kept perspective on what pop music was; her early stuff was spun from sugar and air. Today, it's all gloomy and leaden with trauma. Much as I like Lorde the inward turn of pop music is one of the waste products of her time in the spotlight.

i don't think she was as dumb as she acts like she was. there are some weirdly mature songs on one of the boys and teenage dream (at least lyrically). i'm not gonna pretend it was world-changing stuff but she had songs about addiction ruining relationships, losing your virginity being a disappointment, realizing you fundamentally can't understand your partner, that kind of thing. better writing than taylor swift who gets a lot of respect nowadays, but everyone just thinks katy was a dumb bitch who couldn't write for shit, including herself. i'm not sure why
