Man’s the sole reason I started learning guitar. Heard a fella playing War Pigs one day while I was with my dad as he was buying some new drum sticks. Asked the guy the song and he told me. Listened to the album that night and bought my first electric guitar the next day. Piece of shit epiphone les paul, but it did the job. Now I can play along with every Sabbath song from Black Sabbath to Technical Ecstasy and 13 and proud owner of a gibson sg. When Tony dies, I’ll need to take a couple days off work to mourn the man who had as much influence in my life as my parents

Never understood being hellbent on that, he's one of the key parts in metal, when it was good, but he's not the core of it and always more on the reactionary side of it chasing the traits that defined metal.

All what Iommi had before metal was the sound of the SG that metal forgot it was very good for it for some reason + luck giving him a slight edge for the guitar tone (the accident) that allowed to continued development of his musical identity with gloomy/darkish sounds. But badass riffs though on this motherfucker, all the time

Yeah Dio talked plenty of shit about Blackmore, but he was prepared to suck it up for a payday. In the late '80s there were rumours going in the music press that he was trying to convince Blackmore to reform Rainbow - there's an interview with Iommi and Cozy Powell laughing about it saying that he needs the money.

Ironic considering how things went with Dehumanizer just a few years later lol

I like how always he talked politely about it, that really shows he respected him as an artist; both shared the same kind of love to music. When Dio really talked shit was about Sabbath; he was really bitter about how all that ended, an he was right, they had something special and could become in the best band of all time.

A lot of classic metal acts definitely took major influence from progressive rock. It's no coincidence that metal quite frequently tends to be more musically progressive and instrumentally oriented than other fields of rock music. I would definitely say Red by King Crimson has moments not far off from metal, though of course that's post-Sabbath.
You may dismiss "psychedelic pop" here, but "heavy psych" has a ton in common with early metal.

Dio was a great talent and was famously cool to fans but he could also be a petty dickhead in his own way. He always disliked Martin, he used to shit on him in the press for being a clone (Ozzy also used to refer to him as "Dio's understudy" too lol) so I think Martin did well to take the high road for the most part. They only met once, Iommi gave Martin a backstage pass to a gig on the Dehumanizer tour and when Martin went to meet Dio and shake his hand, Dio was really rude to him and just walked off after about a minute. I don't know if it's because he though it was just Iommi sending him a message (don't think you're irreplaceable) or what but it's still acting like a douche. Martin was also originally meant to do the infamous Costa Mesa gig but somehow Wendy Dio pulled some strings and managed to get his American work visa revoked, which is why Halford was brought in at the last minute.

>"I tried to catch his eye backstage," Martin stated about Dio. "It was a relatively big affair, with people all over the place. And every time he walked past me, I went, 'Ronnie!' And he disappeared. 'Ronnie!' Eventually, I managed to catch his attention. I said, 'Ronnie! Come here.' So he walked over, and he just stared at me. And I thought maybe he was gonna hit me or something; he just stared. And I was trying to explain. I said, 'Ronnie, I love what you do, man. I'm a big fan.' And I said, 'You're a hard act to follow.' And he said, 'Good,' and walked off. That was it. [Laughs] He didn't stay. He just said 'good' and walked off. So that was my only conversation with Ronnie James Dio.

With Blackmore's record you need to take 90% he says with a grain of salt. He pretty much bullied the keyplayer out of Rainbow just because he wasn't fond of him. Also, disposing Glover from Purple because he was Gillan's bro... only to call him back fro Rainbow lmao

Motorhead was a British ZZ Top rip off who played very distorted, and a bit faster, and nothing more.
There was noting "Heavy" about them, and they certainly weren't "Metal".

So much so that Ozzy actually covered it.

It's funny to think that there was a window of time of almost a decade where Blackmore was THE rock god, THE guitar god, and that went away as soon as EVH became a household name. As late as '82 people still held him as a guitar god on top of everyone else. Breaking up Rainbow kinda killed his social recognition though.

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy, Never Say Die
Heaven and Hell - Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer
Iommi solo career featuring other artists - everything else
Only album I have trouble classifying is 13 because it sounds so much like Sabbath, but without Bill on drums it just sounds off despite how good of an album it is

He's the prime example of getting blacklisted for people and media not liking him as a person, long before Ted Nugent. If his reputation among peers and outsiders was positive he would be praised for what he did but since he was mostly an unpleasant guy... you have this reality
