What happened? Warner Brothers/Reprise spent a fortune getting the Mob Rules lineup back together and they attempted to update their sound for the '90s, only for it to do nothing in America and actually do worse than the Tony Martin/Cozy Powell albums in Europe.

Ozzy mogged too hard throughout the '80s and they couldn't recover from it

Sabbath was completely dead as a commercial force after the Gillen album. Few hardcore fans stuck around through the many lineup changes, with most checkout out after Ozzy or Dio left, and the Tony Martin era was simultaneously not extreme enough for the "cool" metalheads and not poppy enough to ride the hair metal wave, and they sank. Literally reached Spinal Tap depths of flopping. By the time the Dio reunion happened the damage was too great. Zero people cared about Sabbath anymore unless they hauled Ozzy and Ward back on stage, which eventually happened.

>needlessly long becuase of the new cd storage size
>dio trying to sound younger than he was by growling all the time
>vinny appice being a boring meat and potatoes drummer as usual

>58 minutes
Actually a reasonable length for the time

yeah but compared to the tight 40 minute albums of their heyday? especially for that type of music?
Master Of Reality is like 35 minutes
but if they did that people would whine about being gypped

I actually love Vinny's really groggy groove on this one. Coupled with the production and mix, I don't think these songs would've been any better even with Cozy there despite him being a better drummer.

That said, Cozy wasn't going to last in this version of the band. Dio and Cozy hated each other, Cozy was pissed off that he wasn't really Iommi's right hand man anymore now that Geezer was back (plus he was pissed off that Tony Martin and Neil Murray were just cast aside, Iommi wasn't happy that Cozy told him in so many words that he was being a douche), and Geezer says in his book that never liked that Cozy "never took Gloria seriously".

I don't know how hot of a take this is, but bobby rondinelli on cross purposes is the best post-70s ward drumming on a sabbath album
Anonymous No.127165201 [Report]

Nah Rondinelli's sick and very tasteful. He actually played a lot of the weird Ward stuff more faithfully live than any of the other Sabbath drummers.

Geezer actually fucked the guitarist of his solo band on royalties for Master of Insanity because Iommi dug in and didn't want another guitarist having a writing credit on a Sabbath album

all I know is I loved it from the first listen during the 90's , about sales and success I have no idea, I never saw Sabbath as a commercially succesful band, or maybe their time passed decades ago, it was only with the reunion tour in the late 90's when I saw them really getting some recognition again

That opening is the only cool part of the song, Tony took the main riff from the wanton song which makes the situation even funnier

This is what the Gary-Sharpe Young book says about the fabled Tony Martin version of Dehumanizer.

Martin said a while ago he found the tapes after thinking for years they'd be lost, but he says that Iommi can't release them thanks to the lawsuit with the Osbourne camp. Also Siegler has said that Wendy Dio would likely cause problems with them.

This, more or less. Dehumanizer is still an amazing album, but wasn’t enough to bring Tony & Co. out of the dumps.

man what a great read. i need to buy this book one day perhaps digitally. poor Tony Martin. dude went through so much bullshit when he was believing in Sabbath.

i just hope to hear his version of Dehumanizer within my lifetime.

Dio's vocals had started to degrade and he entered his gravelly, angry period with that album. The vocal melodies are boring and the riffs not especially memorable. Pic related shits all over Dehumanizer on all levels.

You're the kind of fag that think King Diamond and Tom Araya are the greatest metal singers.
