I like Headless Cross and Tyr. Yeah fine, Cozy's drums are way too loud in the mix but there's some fun songs in there with some great vocals and guitar playing. The poppy fretless bass in Headless Cross is probably a bit of a mismatch though and you can barely actually hear Neil Murray on Tyr.

I'd take Headless Cross over Dream Evil or No Rest for the Wicked.

I get where you're coming from, but I'm not much of a prog rock fan, so I think the Dio era was an improvement. That's also why I like headless cross the most, it captures the vibe of their early work combined with the melody of the Dio era.
Also judas priest started out as prog band and Iron maiden was heavily influenced by it, so it's not like H&H was an unnatural evolution.
