Why does music feel so insincere nowadays?
People used to champion vulnerability and earnestness in every genre
What happened?

It's very simple anon
black people music became the mainstream and most popular
black people don't have consciousness so are incapable of introspection and self reflection

People have to put on this air of detachment at all times because everything is analyzed and scrutinized to death now.

Wipers definitely was vulnerable, if you consider it punk. Same with maybe some college rock (like Replacements).

Everyone is afraid of being genuine since you may come out as cringe, racist, etc.

Blame the early internet for hiding everything upon layers and layers of irony.

He isn't wrong. This site itself is a product of that irony. More of a millennial thing though. Just like the 00 hipsters with ironic mustaches and ironic "breakfast cereal restaurants" and ironically wore lumberback flannels with like hawaiian shorts or something.

Sincerity in rock first started in /lit/ before rock. Like Catcher in the Rye and Holden Caulfield shitting on everyone for being "phonies". Then Rebel Without a Cause, and James Dean's character just keeping it real and not giving a shit about the cool kids in that movie. And then he won over the girl when she saw how real he was. Every guy suddenly wanted to be that dude. I guess that ideal lasted for about 50 years. It's easier to just hide and make a mockery of life.

I'm not saying it's the internet by itself. Just saying a lot of it coincides with a lot of millennial stuff. Gen X weren't ironic hipsters. That was sincerity to the point of death. See Kurt. But even nu-metal could be called sincere. Just a bit cringier. I mean, I still believe Jonathan Davis or Chester when they said they pissed off and were in pain.

money ruins everything. Look at Drake, one of the most soulful rappers ever who made songs like this and essentially gave birth to the lo-fi, night drive genre, even the lyrics talks about his struggles and contradictions of being successful and having regrets

https://youtu.be/PMk8L9FNqnY

then he becomes super successul and becomes a brand and a product instead of an artist. Sad, but a case as old as time
