Shout at the Devil [Elektra, 1984]
It's hardly news that this platinum product is utter dogshit even by heavy metal standards; under direct orders from editors who don't know Iron Maiden from Wynton Marsalis, my beleaguered colleagues on the dailies have been saying so all year, and every insult goes into the press kit. Still, I must mention Mick Mars's dork-fingered guitar before getting to the one truly remarkable thing about this record: a track called "Ten Seconds To Love" in which Vince Neil actually seems to boast about how fast he can ejaculate (or as the lyric sheet puts it, "cum"). And therein, I believe, lies the secret of their commercial appeal--if you don't got it, flaunt it. Follow-up: "Pinkie Prick." D

Now if only he wasn't upboating the world's dullest black dance pop albums back then.

This review first appeared in Christgau's Turkey Shoot column in November '84, but SATD had been out for 14 months at that point.

tl;dr he ignored it for a year straight until the album climbed to the top of the charts and then only belatedly decided to throw a bitchfest about it

I'm not a rockstar or rich or banged a thousand women. But I count my blessings that I wasn't born a twirp. All of these guys are a mess and still seething from highschool trauma well into old age. It just bleeds into everything about their lives. And why you would want music advice from one is beyond me.
