Patti LaBelle confirmed he was and I remember people being pissed at her for saying it wasn't her place to out him. I think he mostly kept it hidden to not upset his mom which is a lot to ask of someone but yeah I'm sure it was a lonely life. Either way, he had an amazing voice so it doesn't matter.
