Patrick's got a great voice but I have zero interest in hearing this. And what the fuck is that album cover?

That's how I felt for a long time, knowing it wasn't a rock or even rock-adjacent album I wasn't interested at all. But if you can get past that, I listened only for a larger dose of Patrick's amazing vocals, it really feels very natural (unlike the cover which was an afterthought clearly).
Even as a Fall Out Boy fan you can see the progression in his performances to what gets done on this album, and also how it influenced their first few 2010s albums. Plus Stump's growth as a lyricist since TTTYG. So that makes it interesting to me, too.

Honestly Soul Punk has a really solid front 6 tracks, the two possible duds are quick and catchy, and the album does a good job of getting you from "rock voice" Patrick to funk/soul Patrick in 3 tracks. Track 6 is like two songs in one and I hate the back half and the following one, but then it finishes on some really good, sexy ballads before the last track is just a sort of chill anthem.
It isn't perfect but it was overhated in it's day and really did deserve a follow up. Even the preview EP, Truant Wave, while a different style (mostly Patrick singing against rapped interludes by guests) had a lot going for it. The two are so different, a lot of people think it's due to backlash to the EP, but I wish we could have seen a third solo release that mixed the two styles into something new.

>solo album from member of a successful band flops
>not because it sucks but because it's just an entirely different genre of music
This must be more common than I'm thinking right?

If you like solo Patrick Stump then I highly recommend watching this concert:

Also this solo song:

Holy shit, that Girlfriend cover is perfect. But I can understand why his solo concerts on the whole weren't super popular if he was mumbling a lot of the vocals (of course it's a 2009 handycam)

Well it’s no surprise that his Cupid’s Chokehold cover is perfect because he sang on the original lol. Patrick had been accused of mumbling long before he started his solo career, but he was still extremely popular when he was in Fall Out Boy. I think the fact that Pete Wentz was a great businessman and knew how to keep the crowd engaged during concerts made up for his lack of enunciation. Here’s an interview where Pete talks about why he thought Soul Punk didn’t have great commercial success:

Was thinking of the Supertramp original song, honestly.
No for sure, Pete acting as the frontman to take heat off of the awkward Pat was really key to their success in live shows. The recent revival of interst in Soul Punk speaks to Pete's point that Patrick went out on a limb for something for himself, and it wasn't very well received, in fact there was so much hate for it that he probably wanted to distance himself from that ambition.
Meanwhile yes, FOB always has had badly mumbled vocals back to the early days, but I think around Infinity on High the way the songs were arranged kind of saved them in a live setting. So it's jarring here without any backing. But still so good, because goddamn, that boy can sing.

Patrick does improve his mumbling a lot post-hiatus and makes a clear effort to enunciate later on in his career. For earlier Fall Out Boy he is pretty hard to understand though, unless you’ve listened to their work over and over again like I have and can understand his pronunciation. Pete’s unusual lyricism also doesn’t make it any easier to understand what he’s saying. Anyways, I would love another solo Patrick album, but I doubt we will get one. I really like the last Fall Out Boy album though.

wait a minute... this is really good
it's basically the Blaqk Audio of Fall Out Boy

...I know you cunce don't care, but I'm going to share an anecdote:
back in 2006 I used to listen to the same playlist on repeat after school while playing runescape (on windows media player; idk if any of you remember the cool effects that used to play in the background while you were listening) that consisted of AFI, Panic! At The Disco, and Fall Out Boy -- as well as the 7 Seconds cover of 99 Luft Balloons for some reasons -- and so I have this very ingrained memory of the innocence of childhood, and runescape, whenever I listen to any of these three bands.
It's almost like a religious experience for me (AFI especially remain one of my favourite bands 20 years later)
