>>127173452That's how I felt for a long time, knowing it wasn't a rock or even rock-adjacent album I wasn't interested at all. But if you can get past that, I listened only for a larger dose of Patrick's amazing vocals, it really feels very natural (unlike the cover which was an afterthought clearly).
Even as a Fall Out Boy fan you can see the progression in his performances to what gets done on this album, and also how it influenced their first few 2010s albums. Plus Stump's growth as a lyricist since TTTYG. So that makes it interesting to me, too.
Honestly Soul Punk has a really solid front 6 tracks, the two possible duds are quick and catchy, and the album does a good job of getting you from "rock voice" Patrick to funk/soul Patrick in 3 tracks. Track 6 is like two songs in one and I hate the back half and the following one, but then it finishes on some really good, sexy ballads before the last track is just a sort of chill anthem.
It isn't perfect but it was overhated in it's day and really did deserve a follow up. Even the preview EP, Truant Wave, while a different style (mostly Patrick singing against rapped interludes by guests) had a lot going for it. The two are so different, a lot of people think it's due to backlash to the EP, but I wish we could have seen a third solo release that mixed the two styles into something new.
