I think he often devalued his compositions by choosing really cheesy instrumentations. Like there's a video of Steve Vai talking about Zappa showing him some guitar licks and they are really beautiful, but then you go and listen to the track he used those licks in and it doesn't even sound like guitar anymore but like some weird marimba shit or something

Zappa's best songs are his guitar instrumentals like Watermelon in Easter Hay and it isn't even close.

A few more thoughts about Frank. He introduced himself with Hot Rats and got his foot in the music industry's door. From there he just did whatever he wanted. People kept buying his shit so they let him. He made everything from weird experimental albums to songs about gay sex with robots to a doo wop tribute album. It's okay to not like it, it's not for everyone. But you should try to understand the reasoning behind it all.
