You usually can turn skip protection off. It can still buffer the audio and provide some skip protection. Converting the audio to a compressed format was to save memory so you would have longer skip protection.

Portable CD players do not convert data in the buffer and they do not compress audio down from 16 bit. The conversion rate time would not be fast enough to create a lossy file. Anyone old enough to remember using a converter software knows this fact.

I should add that bluetooth 6 will support multichannel audio and it's currently being developed in conjunction with Dolby for Flex Connect. You will be able to pair multiple bluetooth speakers for Dolby ATMOS compatibility soon.
