why do people pretend kevin shields is a good guitar player? look at this. half the song is just strumming open chords, the DADAAd tuning is whats doing all the work

It has nothing to do with skills. But songwriting and production.

I don't pay attention, but if they are doing that, I'd agree they're in a bubble about his actual skills. It's good for the other stuff. Not actual shredding.
I guess I'll say that he's unique in that he rides the trem bar during a lot of the rhythm parts. Which isn't common. So I guess he stands out for that skill.
