Why did CDs have no soul for 20 years and now they suddenly have soul? Help me understand the brain of zoomers

Always cracks me up to see stuff like this at record stores like 99 percent of the time they just died but I like to think they were sitting at home and just went "why the fuck do I have all the Paul McCartney?"

>now they suddenly have soul?
Streaming has ripped the soul out of music completely. By having the entire history of recorded music available music has become something to consume, not experience.
CDs, while also digital, still uphold some of the ritual of playing music as a physical format that vinyl and tape have.

I don't care about your retarded question, but not owning at the very least your top favorite albums on some kind of physical format makes you a filthy casual, i.e. a fraud of a music appreciator and "fan".

first issues of actual good albums from the late 80s and early 90s are great on CD
compilations, brickwalled remasters, and pop or buttrock slop from the 00s are sovlless

This. There's no novelty or wanderlust anymore. It's all instantly satiated now.
Instant gratification is a true blight.

I buy CDs because I like having something physical, the art and other papers that might be there, and because I don't have a gramophone ready.

>usually cheaper than vinyl
>less fragile
>you just put it in the reader and press play

I've been pirating/streaming music for years so I hate cassettes, CDs, vinyls and all that shit. My dad used to work as an illegal Gastarbeiter in Germany and he would always bring back home bootleg CDs of Pink Floyd albums or King Crimson albums with the names written on the cover with a shitty pen, it looked like someone had printed a CD with child porn or gore and then stamped "Pink Floyd" on it so that no one would get suspicious

IMHO the key problem is that it killed albums as a concept.
The rest is an issue too mind you.

i still remember walking into the music store with my birthday money at 8 or 9 and buying Hybrid Theory. The cashier just asking "wtf, how old are you, that's so cool" etc. First time I ever cranked my parents stereo

I have a CD from 1989 that feels like a solid disc of metal, at least compared to something 10-20 years later. Much more satisfying in the hand

They always had soul. There was always a benefit of buying a nice package with goodies and a poster or art book. Napster and later streaming ruined it. Streaming never should have been the de facto music platform. Anything with a subscription these days is gay retard slop. The only thing you should be paying monthly is your mortgage. These companies do not, and have never, cared about you.

If I'm going to collect physical music, it's going to be vinyls because the pictures are bigger and that's all there is to it

vinyls are fragile, delicate, EXPENSIVE, lower quality sound, they degrade.
but pre-80s music has the better remaster on vinyl

It's the same process that (arguably) started in the 00s and has been repeating since. It was vinyl, then to a lesser extent cassettes, CDs were gaining traction. It's all the same cliche with the same exact arguments with new inputs, except this won't take off in the same way as vinyl for obvious reasons. If you're buying stuff for a physical collection, just don't be a retard about it. Don't collect to have a collection. Listen to the fucking music you buy. When you stop listening to it, sell it unless it's quite rare (it won't be).

i disagree. jewel cases are brittle and get cracked. digipacks with the plastic backing are easier to open while driving but also can suave stuff being accidentally placed on top of them. they're also thinner so you can fit more in your cd shelf

nobody wants new cds. the appeal of used cds is you can get a pristine digital rip of pretty much anything before 2015 for a couple dollars.

I hate them because they tear easy while being with other cds and the sleeves that hold the cd are hard to get it out sometimes and put scratches on the disc while putting it back in and out
Jewel cases are awesome because if they crack or get damaged you can just get a replacement case and fill in the booklet and back tray art

100% this, I love thrift stores because I can find cool CDs ranging from .50c-$1. Some higher end record stores sell them for $3-5 minimum and I've occasionally caved in to buying them at $8-15 but I've never gone higher.
