My theory is that Chris Martin started out with the ambition to make a living by becoming a famous musician, but once he achieved that goal, he slowly shifted his focus towards simply making people happy with catchy music and entertaining concerts. I respect it but I also hate the fact that he stopped trying to make good music.

It was this, he started questioning existential stuff around the time of X&Y / VLV, got a nasty sleeping pill addiction (prescription, not illicit) and turned to hollyweird spirituality & not making sad/dark music anymore to get out of it but also became the most tepid poptimist in history in the process

+ the South Americans and Asians universally went fucking mental for them during the seemingly endless VLV world tour which, after getting called "bedwetters" by the UK music press and ribbed by half the public even while winning awards and filling british stadiums, made them shy away from the english-language countries and fall in love more with touring the slop countries who welcomed them without any sneering irony even if they made trash 'one-world' popslop; you have to see it from their perspective a little to understand

It's very dense and melancholy to the point it was considered overproduced/filler-heavy at the time and earned them a great deal of their 00s reputation as overwrought emos
Half the tracks considered filler then are 10/10s by today's slop standards, thoughever
