It's neither prince, nor is it kpop. It's probably closer to Boz Scaggs. A lot of boomers there probably liked it, and a lot of young people probably thought it was pretty corny by the 90s. Upper-middle-class, technically impressive, but also maybe a little bit wanky and pretentious. I'm sure japanese yuppies listened to it while committing unspeakably evil acts towards the future.

That said, just enjoy it. Young fans have made it really annoying to listen to. It'd be nice to have somebody with self awareness.

Eagles don't have much of an urban feel. Which is kind of the "city" in City Pop. It's folk rock with Cali desert vibes or something.

I'm on nothing. Ferry and Sade are Brit sophistipop. That was the closest equivalent to city pop in the 80s in the West. It's not complicated.
City Pop itself emerged and was influenced by the 70s, but it doesn't mean the 70s themselves were the same. It was just the taking off point.

Its American pop and probably 10 years behind which means artists like Billy Joel and whatever was big at the time with a more Tokyo and 80s spin I guess but you can still hear the 80s influence too with some of the sounds it uses

You can say what you want but city pop but it might of came back and influenced some of the 80s music in the west. I pretty sure artists were aware of it and Japan was the second biggest economy at the time so its influence in the west wasn't 0. How artists felt about it who knows but you cant say the music didn't sound similar and different from what was going on in music from the 70s

Zoomers are desperately trying to revive literally every 90s genre. They do their own soulless versions that are basically like-harvesting on Tiktok.
Everything from grunge, to jungle - you'll find those little faggots on social media sucking the lifeforce out whatever they can.
The only genre their vapid generation ever came up with was mumble rap.
Jfc I wish those dopamine-drained zombie freaks would leave our stuff alone before I end up hating literally everything.

City pop is alright. A lot of the reason it got popular was just cause it's Japanese it was more socially acceptable than similar music that was stigmatized by the rockcrit intelligentsia and hipsters for years now, like yacht rock, jazz-funk, soul, sophistipop, etc. They weren't all wrong, on average city pop is better, but the cream of the crop of that stuff got shafted
The discourse around city pop here is all tainted by nazi dogshit. You'll have the far-right weebs doing the whole anti-black angle, and you'll have even farther-right nazis doing the whole "all the nonwhites are evil, even your pet japs" shill angle fighting with them. So any threads about it on here probably just end up worthless dogshit

some late 80s-early 90s does have Sophistipop elements, but late 70s-early 80s City Pop is just Japanese Jazz-Funk and Soul, while mid 80s City Pop is Synthpop. Toshiki Kadomatsu and Anri are the yardstick of City Pop, they released an album every single year of the 80s and you can hear the genre evolve.

Not all 1980s Japanese pop is City Pop, here's a some "normal" J-Pop
