My Beefheart process was like this:
>listening to tmr and hating it
>listening to safe as milk and thinking it was his only good album
>listening to mirror man and realizing he was pretty talented actually
>listening to lick my decals off baby and loving the instrumental tracks
>listening to tmr again and now liking it
Nowadays I love his entire catalogue, specially TMR and Lick My Decals Off. I also have a special place in my heart for his last 3 albums.

for me it was this image of john lennon that led me to the album safe as milk
although technically before that i had heard that a beefheart song in the big lebowski. i had also heard a cover of the song dropout boogie https://youtu.be/WjIk_8a1Z9g
i loved safe as milk all the way through, and still do to this day, it's just very clean and energetic. it really is as the album title says, safe as milk. it's groovy. can't even recall the rest of the order cause i just quickly became obsessed with don and the paintings, words, and music. i definitely spotlight kid and earlier are my favorites. but every single album has at least some songs that i would revere.

i will say the two albums i was most NOT into was clear spot and bluejeans and moonbeams, but eventually even stuff in those albums that blew me away. https://youtu.be/JaOs-2PcFBU

TMR isn't that exhausting if you already have the mentality to enjoy chaotic music, i think it just gets it's meme status from a combination of the album cover and don's lyrics / delivery. I CANNOT GO BACK TO YOUR FROWNLAND MY SMILE IS STUCK. i remember sentences and song names more than some of the music on that album desu. the phrases are so memorable. when big joan sets up.

man i shouldve edited that, sorry. and i linked the wrong song from bluejeans and moonbeams, not really a fan of party of special things, i was trying to link this song.
https://youtu.be/t61k6p2ZhOM
which is the one that blew me away from that album even though it's one of my least enjoyed records from don and co

i feel like this song has a quality to it that puts it up there with all of some of those most highly revered pensive classic rock ballads.. like black sabbath's changes or something

TMR is fun, catchy, danceable af. This one is dense, weird, even after 4 or 5 listens i can get into it. I have been filtered
