Songs About Fucking is terrific, but some of the songs off Pigpile are the peak of Big Black for me. Cables and Steelworker sound dark and menacing in a way that only comes across somewhat on songs like Tiny, King of the Jews and Bad Houses on their studio albums, which are far more bare and sparse in comparison. Steve not singing into the mic half the time on the Pigpile recordings somehow adds to the effect.

Budd (song) from Rapeman is also incredible for its atmosphere. Rapeman's tiny little discography is incredible, but Budd is another standout for me.

Respect this opinion. Great live album, Cables, Steelworker, Kerosene, Dead Billy.
But imo everything on Songs About Fucking is menacing having that effect, all the songs are teetering to an edge, the guitar tone, bass, and Roland ensures threatening escape from the claustrophobic sounds, the drum sound sound's so amazing considering it was 1987, awesome echoed room drum sound. I like how Side A is perfection, Steve admitted this, while Side B teeters off into longer compositions, all the while maintaining this edgy-about-to-explode sound. Every song on Side B sounds like it's about to fall of the edge of the Earth. Ergot, Fish Fry, Pavement Saw, and Tiny are perfect yet spacial longing compliments to Side A, though not as fast, they are more dearth in comparison, which makes the whole the album so interesting. I'd argue Side B is just as good as Side A, though that is not an argument I'd die on a hill for considering how perfect Side A is, though B has interdasting compliments exploring the sound of the fastness that was remarkable on the superior considered side of Songs About Fucking
