or as Lemmy once said, "Some people say we're punk, some say we're metal, some say we're hard rock. I say Motorhead just plays rock-and-roll."

This is the theory I subscribe to. Motorhead is classic 50s rock n' roll and r&b turned up to 11.

Nah.
In the beginning, at least, Motorhead was England's answer to ZZ Top, although a bit faster in many parts.

No they weren't.
They were neither.
They were Soul/R&B
Fuck, they were even James Brown's back up band at one time.

He played in hawkwind, which is both prog-rock and proto-punk. Lemmy is the daddy of both punk and metal.

I've always seen them as a swing/bebop power orchestra that used the distorted instruments typical to the 70s psychedelic rock

the differences in rock genres are more about scene fashion and posturing than anything else. late 70s motorhead doesn't sound all that different to early thrash. especially compared to venom who were a blatant motorhead clone on the first two records.

No.
Venom took their cue from Discharge, not Motorhead.
