I think presenting yourself as "a" artist instead of "*artist name* and the band" or a band name is just wrong. The singer takes credit for all the work when most of the work were done by others; instrumentalists, lyricists and etc. It's not like a book, when all of the work were done by a single person (usually).

Am I wrong in thinking this?

No. The Doors for example should have been called Jim Morrison and The Doors since he was the major magnetic force behind them. Krieger/Densmore were decent instrumentalists and Manzarek was phenomenal but it was Jimbo who made them a legendary band. Without him they went down faster than a rock thrown into water
