Aside from this zany and varied record, I am really struggling to understand the appeal and influence of Pavement, who seem preoccupied with a singular mode of sound and lot of impersonal sarcasm

I don't understand the appeal of Pavement and blame them for inspiring a lot of horrid trends.

they're kind of just loosey goosey. and 90s nostalgia. i wouldn't say they're overrated, they kind of just did their own thing. a less earnest version of built to spill. nothing special, kind of shit. i'd say they're the death cab for cutie of the 90s

I liked them a lot when I was teenager around the same time I really like Mac DeMarco. They have some cool songs mostly on Slanted and Enchanted but they get worse with every album.

those are all 8/10s or better and the rest of the album is average or better. Huge variety of sounds on the album too and a lot of varied energy. Malkmus has a great yell, can be edgy, emotional, fun, silly, all sorts of good hooks too like Rattled by the Rush. Its probably their best record but the 2 before it have some insane highs like Summer Babe and Gold Soundz
