This album was a let down when it came out, and it still largely is, but it does contain the last gasp of great song writing from Gira. People Like Us is a top tier Nu-Swans track. The writing was still on the walls though and the issues that were present here have only become worse as time has gone on. Birthing is filled to the brim with good ideas but it doesnt know how to link them, or allow them the opportunity to earn the climax they are all building towards. At least with the epics on TGM the peaks feel slightly earned, particularly on the title track and Cloud of Forgetting.

I don't go back to the 2 hour Swans albums very much but I do recall liking this one and The Seer more than the others. Birthing was also pretty good considering I can't even remember the two before it.

While I prefer prior releases, I think Swans' recent return to a softer sound reminiscent of what Gira and co were doing during the Angels of Light years (albeit not so folk tinged) has been swell enough and understandable considering that Gira is fucking 71 years old.

Nu-Swans was only good for The Seer and the next album after(don't recall the name).
