If you are doing something else, then you can't truly enjoy music as it's supposed to be enjoyed. Sometimes just attention isn't enough and you have to read an analysis or listen repeatedly. Music takes as much concentration and focus as proving a math theory or solving a hard differential equation problem, it is a mental exercise, and if you do not like that, you do not genuinely like music. Or you like it as much as pop listeners like their pop slop, a.k.a. you are a cattle.

Music has mostly been communal...whether for religion or festive stuff. Not eggheads.
That said, this has little to do with background music. I'm not entirely disagreeing with you. Background music is a modern phenomenon of recorded music.

i dont have enough hours in the day to sit and just listen to music, I have a job, and even worse I have aspirations to be a musician. I get a good 4 to 5 hours of music listening on a good day and yes its while I shitpost or browse, or even write/read. When you've heard an album 50 times yes you still get a lot out of hearing it in the background, if its a really good album I might sit there and focus on it the first time but I find maybe one of those a year
