They have talent at writing songs. That's a different thing to the technical ability to play an instrument like a virtuoso. The talent for writing songs is something that exists in their head, it's in how they envisage the songs, everything else is just making the vision become reality with the tools they have.
Also Kurt was pretty dedicated to what he was doing, regardless of the image he had. He had a nack for coming up with melodies though which is something rare but he also put in a lot of effort. If you look at the history of Nirvana the reason they went through so many members was because Kurt wanted to rehearse every single day (uncommon for a bunch of teens / early 20s to do) and he also wanted everything to be his way. Krist nearly left the band at one point because of the latter.

I think the only way to become better at songwriting is just to keep writing them tbqh until you figure out what works.
You're not going to start out fully formed, no one does. Everyone writes a lot of crap before they write something good. If you have a half finished song I would suggest completing it and then afterwards you can look at your finished song and decide what you'd like to do differently. Then you can always redo it later or write a new song.
Also if you're singing then one of the biggest problems is figuring out how you want your vocals to be, that may mean playing the song in different keys until you find one that works well. A lot of shitty amateur musicians sound shitty because they're singing in a range that doesn't suit them which could easily be fixed by changing the key of the song.
This may not be your problem but it's definitely a common one.
