I like Faust, but they were pretty much a German version of the Mothers of Invention. Can was a more unique fusion of James Brown, modern classical, free jazz, and the VU. The 3 Damo album are all better than any Faust album. I do agree with the anon who said Tapes and s/t are the best Faust.

And I agree with your statement. Faust definitely took a lot from Zappa, while most other kraut bands were more influenced by Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd.

If the Mothers of Invention is the only rock band allowed to do sound collages then I guess Faust are just the Mothers of Invention. I don't think the Mothers of Invention ever did anything as beautiful as the folky bits on Faust S/T, though.

Not really. So Far is probably more VU oriented (Sunshine Girl) but still has a lot of Zappaesque bits. IV might be their only one out of their original run without much influence from Mothers, since it's more similar to Floyd most of the time. Don't get me wrong I love the band but they aren't as original or groundbreaking as many claim, specially compared to their national contemporaries.
